Join York Central Hospital Foundation as we take strides in support of the District Stroke Centre located here in York Region. Sign up for the 5K Run/Walk or participate in the 1K Children's Scamper for those 12 and under. You can also join the "Celebrating Mobility" participants (formerly Hip Hip Hooray) in their 1K walk.

Since 2006, this annual event has raised over $470,000, helping to fund the expansion and the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment for York Central Hospital. This year, proceeds will be directed to the York Region District Stroke Centre located within the hospital.

As the District Stroke Centre for York Region, York Central has a leadership role in ensuring that stroke patients have rapid access to diagnosis and treatment, appropriate rehabilitation, and long-term care services.

Your support of the Richview Manor Strides for Stroke 5K Run/Walk will directly contribute to funding an annual District Stroke Bursary. This bursary will provide York Central Hospital staff with access to high-quality education opportunities, including the up-to-date knowledge on best practices they require to effectively care for and treat stroke patients. Proceeds from the event will also help fund equipment to support staff in delivering acute stroke treatment.

What do you know about stroke?

IT’S IMPORTANT
In Canada, someone has a stroke every 10 minutes.

IT’S TIME SENSITIVE (Time is Brain!)
1.9 million brain cells die every minute during a stroke.

IT’S DEVASTATING
14,000 Canadians (6,000 Ontarians) die from stroke each year. It is the third leading cause of death in this country.

About 300,000 Canadians (90,000 Ontarians) are living with the effects of stroke.

It is the leading cause of disability in Canada and the world.

IT’S A MEDICAL EMERGENCY
Know the warning signs and call 9-1-1 immediately if you or someone you know is experiencing them.
 - Sudden weakness or loss of strength
 - Trouble speaking or sudden confusion
 - Sudden vision problems
 - Sudden severe and unusual headaches
 - Sudden loss of balance, especially with any of the above signs

IT’S PREVENTABLE
Over 80% of strokes are the result of risk factors that can be controlled by lifestyle or medication… What do you know about your risks?

Once you’ve had a stroke, you’re at much higher risk of a having a second one… Do you know what to do to stop it?

For every stroke bringing someone to the hospital there are 5-9 “silent strokes”. People are unaware of these small strokes, yet they increase the risk of cognitive impairment. Know your risk factors.

Have diabetes? Your risk of stroke is 2-3 times greater… What should you be doing?
Inactive? This is likely the biggest risk factor… Is it really as simple as walking daily?
Smoking? Your risk is 4 times greater... Ready to butt out?
Have high blood pressure or High cholesterol? There are simple solutions, and they may cost less than you think!
Overweight? Did you know your waist measurement means more than the number on the scale?
