What do you know about stroke?
IT’S IMPORTANT In Canada, someone has a stroke every 10 minutes.
IT’S TIME SENSITIVE (Time is Brain!) 1.9 million brain cells die every minute during a stroke.
IT’S DEVASTATING 14,000 Canadians (6,000 Ontarians) die from stroke each year. It is the third leading cause of death in this country.
About 300,000 Canadians (90,000 Ontarians) are living with the effects of stroke.
It is the leading cause of disability in Canada and the world.
IT’S A MEDICAL EMERGENCY Know the warning signs and call 9-1-1 immediately if you or someone you know is experiencing them. - Sudden weakness or loss of strength - Trouble speaking or sudden confusion - Sudden vision problems - Sudden severe and unusual headaches - Sudden loss of balance, especially with any of the above signs
IT’S PREVENTABLE Over 80% of strokes are the result of risk factors that can be controlled by lifestyle or medication… What do you know about your risks?
Once you’ve had a stroke, you’re at much higher risk of a having a second one… Do you know what to do to stop it?
For every stroke bringing someone to the hospital there are 5-9 “silent strokes”. People are unaware of these small strokes, yet they increase the risk of cognitive impairment. Know your risk factors.
Have diabetes? Your risk of stroke is 2-3 times greater… What should you be doing? Inactive? This is likely the biggest risk factor… Is it really as simple as walking daily? Smoking? Your risk is 4 times greater... Ready to butt out? Have high blood pressure or High cholesterol? There are simple solutions, and they may cost less than you think! Overweight? Did you know your waist measurement means more than the number on the scale?
